Summary

“A cozy whodunit that cheerfully affirms girls’ and women’s contributions to aerospace。” —Kirkus Reviews

Amelia Earhart’s famous aviator goggles go missing and eleven-year-old Millie has to find them before the night is over in this girl-powered middle grade mystery。

Eleven-year-old Amelia Ashford—Millie to her friends (if she had any, that is)—doesn’t realize just how much adventure awaits her when she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime: to spend the night in Amelia Earhart’s childhood home with five other girls。 Make that five strangers。 But Millie’s mom is a pilot like the famous Amelia, and Millie would love to have something to write to her about…if only she had her address。

Once at Amelia’s house in Atchison, Kansas, Millie stumbles upon a display of Amelia’s famous flight goggles。 She can’t believe her good luck, since they’re about to be relocated to a fancy museum in Washington, DC。 But her luck changes quickly when the goggles disappear, and Millie was the last to see them。 Soon, fingers are pointing in all directions, and someone falls strangely ill。 Suddenly, a fun night of scavenger hunts and sweets takes a nosedive and the girls aren’t sure who to trust。 With a blizzard raging outside and a house full of suspects, the girls have no choice but to band together。 It’s up to the Amelia Six to find the culprit and return the goggles to their rightful place。 Or the next body to collapse could be one of theirs。

Now they six strangers must band together to locate the priceless flight goggles and identify the criminal amongst them。 This is a fun, fast-paced middle grade mystery that celebrates the ingenuity and perseverance of a diverse group of girls。 The action stalls occasionally and there are a few clunky moments, but overall this will please middle grade readers who enjoy learning a bit of history while solving a whodunit。 。。。more

Seriously awesome 3-5 grade read for fans of Amelia Earhart, or maybe bios or mysteries。 Does a great job of introducing the girls to each other and describing their characters。 Love all the history, I didn't know a LOT of that, I remember being mildly interested an Amelia Earhart when I was younger。 I by no means had the mystery solved either。 Great references at the end。 Seriously awesome 3-5 grade read for fans of Amelia Earhart, or maybe bios or mysteries。 Does a great job of introducing the girls to each other and describing their characters。 Love all the history, I didn't know a LOT of that, I remember being mildly interested an Amelia Earhart when I was younger。 I by no means had the mystery solved either。 Great references at the end。 。。。more

Six girls are invited to spend a weekend at the Amelia Earhart birthplace in Atchison, KS。 A mysterious disappearance forces the girls to work together to solve a mystery。 I loved the history lessons mixed into the problem solving and girl power。 Great for our history lovers。

A great middle school mystery。 When Millie, and five other girls, win a contest and get to spend the night at the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, they never dream they will be held hostage and involved in a fight for their lives。 This book was entertaining and informative。

“Adventure really is worthwhile。” This MG novel reads like an old-fashioned murder mystery, without the murder。 Six girls are given the chance to spend the night in Amelia Earhart’s childhood home in Kansas。 What ensues is missing goggles, someone falling strangely ill, a blizzard, and a house full of suspects。 I think students will enjoy sleuthing their way through this fun mystery。

This started off on a weird note: you invited six girls to spend the night, but only have accommodations for four? And the other two just have to sleep on the floor? And you tell them to "figure it out on their own"?Once the mystery got started, it was just too confusing。 All the girls blended into one another and every single roadblock was instantly solved by these super-smart 11-year-olds。 Don't let my tweens read the part where they all have phones either。The idea had so much potential but th This started off on a weird note: you invited six girls to spend the night, but only have accommodations for four? I am pretty disappointed in this book。 It's such a cool premise--six girls chosen to spend the night in the Amelia Earhart house。 But that's about it。 I read the author's note, hoping for some comment about there being a live-in caretaker for the house or the possibility of there ever having been an overnight there, but from the start, I couldn't suspend disbelief at having kids spend the night in a 100+ year old house and MUSEUM and saying they could sleep in the bedroom where AE was born! That just seems crazy (not to mention them finding AE's suitcase filled with 90-100yo clothes and putting them on)。 Then there were all these crazy situations with adults who were supposed to be taking care of the girls and they just either said weirdly over familiar things to the girls throughout the evening (one night doesn't make you my nice old aunt) or left them completely unsupervised。 I know that books are supposed to be departure from reality sometimes, but this one was too close with departures that just gave me pause left and right。 AND the whole situation with Millie's mom was just like never addressed。 She doesn't know where her mom is (she left the family? No word on how her dad feels, also what is the timeline), she finds out from looking at an address book in the house, and ends up writing her mom a letter seemingly to show that she's kind of moving on, but there are all these references throughout the book to what her mom would think of her actions and stuff。。。it left me wondering what was the point if we weren't going to take that on on a deeper level。 Also I didn't really feel like I got to know Millie--she was kind of a tired I-don't-have-any-friends-and-am-awkward thing, and that felt played out。 (Also, wtf, there were some things that just didn't jive with how a 10/11yo would talk, case in point, "I don't think this thing had been cleaned since the Clinton Administration。" I'm 30 and I would never say something like that!) Anyway, the nice thing I can think of with this book is that it does make a point of talking about all the groundbreaking Amelia Earhart did and how the girls themselves take it to heart and are encouraged to break more ground。 。。。more

Oh my goggles, how I loved this book! Mystery, puzzles, new friends, a pet rat, & a cast of suspicious characters woven within a plot centered around all things Amelia Earhart。 One of my top middle grade books of 2020, without a doubt! History & mystery lovers, don’t miss it! “You can be quiet and brave。”

This is a fun, middle grade novel。 I'd give it 2 and a half stars。 It follows the story of six girls - all interested in science - who get to spend the night at Amelia Earhart's home。 What starts out as a fun scavenger hunt turns seriously as they lose power and Amelia's famous goggles go missing。 Friendships are forged, blah, blah, blah。 It was a little too shallow for my tastes。 But I did learn some cool things about Amelia Earhart。 I will have my almost 11 year old read it for fun。 This is a fun, middle grade novel。 I'd give it 2 and a half stars。 It follows the story of six girls - all interested in science - who get to spend the night at Amelia Earhart's home。 What starts out as a fun scavenger hunt turns seriously as they lose power and Amelia's famous goggles go missing。 Friendships are forged, blah, blah, blah。 It was a little too shallow for my tastes。 But I did learn some cool things about Amelia Earhart。 I will have my almost 11 year old read it for fun。 。。。more

This is a fun, classic-type mystery that pits some very smart kids against a thief who is no match for their wits。 The girls are likable, the museum setting is interesting, the worsening storm creates some nice tension, and the plot offers up a couple of twists I didn't see coming。 The plot is far-fetched, of course, and the girls don't always talk or act like 11-year-olds (for instance, they swear like senior citizens—the only people I've ever heard use the expressions "Blast it" and "Oh, crumb This is a fun, classic-type mystery that pits some very smart kids against a thief who is no match for their wits。 The girls are likable, the museum setting is interesting, the worsening storm creates some nice tension, and the plot offers up a couple of twists I didn't see coming。 The plot is far-fetched, of course, and the girls don't always talk or act like 11-year-olds (for instance, they swear like senior citizens—the only people I've ever heard use the expressions "Blast it" and "Oh, crumb," are my elderly parents), BUT this book is still a fun, entertaining caper that I enjoyed。 Bonus: I learned A LOT I didn't know about the very intriguing Amelia Earhart。 。。。more

This was really fun! I loved the setting, the Amelia Earhart museum。 I loved the idea of brilliant girls coming together for a cool opportunity but also connecting。 I would read more about Millie, her friends and their adventures。 A fun mystery that didn't involve art theft (interestingly common in middle grade) had enough thrills to keep it exciting and cool historical detail too。 The girls were all complex and quirky with some diversity indicated in descriptions。 This was really fun! Good mystery for the younger set, although a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is required。 But any mystery surrounding Amelia Earhart is a good read。

I'll be interested to see what kids think of this book。 It was a fun "locked room" type mystery, but the girls all blended together for me (except Millie), and I kept having to flip back to their introductions to figure out "wait, was that the girl whose mom works at NASA or the one with a social media account or。。。?" Their close friendship seemed to happen rather suddenly, with suspicions of each other and snarky comments abruptly becoming teamwork and supportive cheerleading。 I'll be interested to see what kids think of this book。 It was a fun "locked room" type mystery, but the girls all blended together for me (except Millie), and I kept having to flip back to their introductions to figure out "wait, was that the girl whose mom works at NASA or the one with a social media account or。。。?" Just finished reading this great twisty little mystery。 I really enjoyed the historical elements of the story and the way the author built up suspense。 Lots of fun relatable characters as well。 Nicely placed clues add to the suspense。 The whole story is set in Amelia Earhart's childhood home。 As soon as Amelia's goggles go missing, the story takes off。 Difficult to guess the ending, which is always a bonus as far as I'm concerned。 Would be a great read for those who enjoyed The Westing Game (alt Just finished reading this great twisty little mystery。 I really enjoyed the historical elements of the story and the way the author built up suspense。 Lots of fun relatable characters as well。 Nicely placed clues add to the suspense。 The whole story is set in Amelia Earhart's childhood home。 As soon as Amelia's goggles go missing, the story takes off。 Difficult to guess the ending, which is always a bonus as far as I'm concerned。 Would be a great read for those who enjoyed The Westing Game (although not quite as intense a read as the Westing Game) or the Echo Falls mystery series。 Age appropriate without language or anyone being in true mortal danger。 。。。more
